HSBC MULTI-CURRENCY BUSINESS WALLET

I led discovery and proposition design for a multi-currency business wallet at HSBC, identifying gaps in their SME banking offer and proposing 'Sweep & Earn' — a feature to automatically move surplus business funds into short-term deposit products to earn yield.

  • I mapped the competitive landscape, ran structured interviews with SMEs across FX, payments, treasury, and risk, and translated those insights into user journeys and clickable prototypes that showed how the product would deliver real value.
  • The concept, including Sweep & Earn, was approved at the internal funding stage — giving HSBC a clear, customer-grounded proposition and a foundation for further design and market exploration.

Overview

HSBC wanted to explore a new multi-currency business wallet proposition to compete with digital challengers. The project was at the earliest discovery stage — no defined product, only a mandate to understand the opportunity and design a credible concept.

I was brought in as consultant to run that discovery and shape the proposition.

The problem

HSBC's existing business banking products had significant gaps. SMEs managing money across currencies faced complex cash management, no automated yield on unused balances, limited multi-currency tooling, and a fragmented experience across accounts and channels.

Without a compelling and differentiated concept, there was no basis to justify the investment needed to build something new.

What I did

I started by mapping the competitive landscape — examining FX margins, treasury products, and liquidity tools offered by Wise, Revolut Business, and Monzo Business to understand where HSBC's gaps were largest.

I then ran structured interviews with internal SMEs across FX, payments, treasury, digital banking, and risk. The goal was to understand both customer pain points and the internal constraints that any product concept would need to work within.

The clearest customer pain point was idle cash: SMEs routinely held surplus funds in current accounts that earned nothing, and didn't have simple tools to move that money or optimise it without manual treasury operations.

From that insight, I proposed Sweep & Earn — a feature that would automatically move surplus business funds into short-term deposit products, earning yield without requiring the customer to actively manage cash positions.

I created conceptual user journeys and clickable prototypes to show how the wallet would work in practice: multi-currency management, FX oversight, and automatic cash optimisation as a unified experience. I tested these with internal stakeholders and refined the concept based on feedback.

Impact

The concept, including Sweep & Earn, was approved at the internal funding stage. It gave HSBC a proposition grounded in real customer value and technical feasibility, and set the foundation for further design work and market exploration.
